The Derby Stakes, also known as the Derby or the Epsom Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey on the first Saturday of June each year, over a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 metres), or about 1½ miles. [ 1 ]

Epsom Downs is a Grade 1 racecourse in a hilly area near Epsom in Surrey, England which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. The "Downs" referred to in the name are part of the North Downs . The course has a crowd capacity of 130,000 including people watching from the Epsom Downs , an area freely open to the public. [ 1 ]

Trial races for the Epsom Derby are horse races during April and May which are contested by three-year-olds likely to run in the Derby in early June. Most Derby runners appear in at least one race in the weeks before the event, although some, such as the winners Lammtarra and Shaamit , may arrive at Epsom with no previous run as a three-year-old.
On 9 May at Epsom, Assassin won the Derby, beating Lord Grosvenor's colt Sweet Robin and Charles Bunbury's colt Fortunio. [7] Lord Egremont won the Derby for the first time with Assassin, and won the race four more times with Hannibal in 1804, with Cardinal Beaufort in 1805, with Election in 1807 and with Lap-dog in 1826.
