Built in 1926, the lodge used salvaged portions of the Field Hotel, demolished the same year when the level of Lake Chelan was raised. Located in Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, the lodge was rehabilitated to function as the National Park Service Stehekin District Headquarters and Visitor Center in 2002. [2] [3]
It eventually evolved over time into the elegant Hotel Field, owned and operated by the early entrepreneur Merritt Field. In 1926, the hotel's time came to an end when a dam was built in Chelan raising the lake to a level that would eventually flood the ground where the hotel stood. Originally, it was located north of the Field Hotel at the head of Lake Chelan. The first ranger station had two buildings. The first building, the office, was a simple log cabin, 22 feet (6.7 m) by 22 feet (6.7 m). The other building was an 18 by 22-foot (6.7 m) horse barn. This ranger station was abandoned in 1927 because of rising lake waters.
