Punta del Este (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpunta ðel ˈeste]) is a seaside city and peninsula on the Atlantic Coast in the Maldonado Department of southeastern Uruguay.Starting as a small town, Punta del Este grew to become a resort for the Latin and North American jet set and tourists.
Punta del Este is virtually connected to the city of Maldonado and eastward spread widely, encompassing La Barra and José Ignacio. It has 122 hotels, 80 restaurants, an international airport and a yacht port that can accommodate 500 boats. About 8 kilometers southeast of Punta del Este is the Lobos Island full of South American fur seals.
La Mano (The Hand) is a sculpture in Punta del Este by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal. [3] It depicts five human fingers partially emerging from sand and is located on Parada 1 at Brava Beach [2] in Punta del Este, a popular tourist town in Uruguay.
Along with Isla de Lobos, the island has been declared to be a National Heritage, attracting tourists on beaches annually. A man by the last name Martínez, the first owner of the La Barra hotel, La Posta del Cangrejo, convinced the then Uruguayan president Eduardo Víctor Haedo to build a bridge linking that town with Punta del Este. Historically, there has been two bridges built at the same crossing of the Maldonado River which each failed due to natural disasters.
