The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU or Cosatu) is a trade union federation in South Africa. It was founded in 1985 and is the largest of the country's three main trade union federations, with 21 affiliated trade unions.
In 1956, vice president Lucy Mvubelo and some unions resigned in protest at the confederation's affiliation to the African National Congress and its close co-operation with the World Federation of Trade Unions. This group later established the small Federation of Free African Trade Unions of South Africa. [4] [1]
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is the largest of the three major trade union centres, with a membership of 1.8 million, and is part of the Tripartite alliance with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).
SACTWU is the sixth largest affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU). The union was born through the merger of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers' Union of South Africa and the Garment and Allied Workers' Union of South Africa, on 16 September 1989.
