The Kai Ken (甲斐犬, Kai-ken, Kai-inu [1], also called the Tora Inu or Tiger Dog) is a breed of dog native to the Kai region, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, [2] where it is a national monument. It is a rare dog even in its native land and is one of the six native Japanese dog breeds protected by the Nihon Ken Hozonkai .
The Kawakami Inu is a medium sized spitz type dog, closely related to the Shiba Inu, the height at the withers is around 35-45cm. They are a double coated breed with short, dense fur, the accepted coat colours are red, black, white, and brown. The Kawakami Inu has a more wolf-like face than the Shiba Inu, [8] its eyes are a dark reddish-brown. [4]
The Matagi (マタギ, or less often 又鬼) are traditional winter hunters of the Tōhoku region of northern Japan, most famously today in the Ani area in Akita Prefecture, which is known for the Akita dogs. Afterwards, they spread to the Shirakami-Sanchi forest between Akita and Aomori, and other areas of Japan.
