Nothing but a Heartache" is a Northern soul hit originally released on the Deram Records label in November 1968 by South Carolina trio The Flirtations. The song was produced by Wayne Bickerton and co-written by Bickerton and Tony Waddington, who were later responsible for the 1970s successes of The Rubettes.
"Nothing But a Heartache" rose to first place on the "Bubbling Under" list in December 1968 and gave the Flirtations a second Top 40 hit in the Netherlands, reaching No. 36 in early 1969. On the success of those singles in March 1969 they embarked on an 18 date tour of the UK with Stevie Wonder and The Foundations.
He and Bickerton continued writing songs together. One of the most successful was "Nothing but a Heartache", recorded by American girl singing group The Flirtations, which reached No. 34 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1969, [7] and is now regarded as a Northern soul classic. It was recorded 36 years later by Southside Johnny in 2005. [8]
It was released on 21 January 2007, with the single "Rain Down Love" being released two weeks earlier in anticipation of the album. "Nothing But a Heartache", a cover of the original single by the Flirtations, was released as a digital download single on iTunes on 18 June 2007.
Wayne Bickerton (born Arthur Ronald Bickerton; [1] 11 July 1941 – 29 November 2015) was a British record producer, songwriter and music business executive. He became well known, with Tony Waddington, as writer and producer of a series of UK chart hits in the 1970s for The Rubettes, and as a leading figure in SESAC – one of the three major American performing rights organisations.

The Flirtations were a pro-LGBT, male a cappella musical group active from 1988 to 1997. The original members were Jon Arterton, Michael Callen , Aurelio Font, TJ Myers, and Cliff Townsend. On the Out On the Road album they were joined by Jimmy Rutland.
