A part of Gallagher's first major body of work, Delirious Hem comprises pieces of paper glued to a canvas with five penmanship paper sets glued on top. Dispersed around the canvas are numerous groups of tiny human lips that represent minstrel shows and the stereotypes they perpetuate about African Americans.
This artwork illustrates a scene from Aesop's fable, where a mouse gnaws at a hunter's net to free a captured lion. The story highlights themes of kindness and reciprocity, as the lion had previously shown mercy to the mouse, which now returns the favour. The artists made multiple copies of the painting. [2]
