Original description : A size comparison of four different snakes; comparing large individuals of the extant green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) and reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) to total length estimates of the extinct Gigantophis and Titanoboa. • The green anaconda is the largest (most massive) extant snake.
It has a fairly stocky build for an elapid, and adult snakes are uniformly light to medium brown, while the juveniles tend to be a darker brown in color. [4] They have 23-27 scale rows around the neck and 21 just above the middle part of the body; 182-193 ventrals, 36-49 subcaudals, and basal pairs are sometimes undivided.
The color pattern consists of an olive green background overlaid with black blotches along the length of the body. The head is narrow compared to the body, usually with distinctive orange-yellow striping on either side. The eyes are set high on the head, allowing the snake to see out of the water while swimming without exposing its body.
The word anaconda is derived from the name of a snake from Ceylon that John Ray described in Latin in his Synopsis Methodica Animalium (1693) as serpens indicus bubalinus anacandaia zeylonibus, ides bubalorum aliorumque jumentorum membra conterens. [7] Ray used a catalogue of snakes from the Leyden museum supplied by Dr. Tancred Robinson.

Like other Naja spp., Three-finger toxins (3FTx) dominate the venom proteome. 3FTx constituted 90% of the total venom proteins, recording by far the highest 3FTx abundance in snake venom. Other proteins in the venom comprised snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMP, 4.17%) and phospholipases A 2 (PLA 2 3.76%).
