Historian Tom Holland's In the Shadow of the Sword makes a claim that Bakkah and Mecca are unlikely to be the same place. This article only gives the traditional Islamic perspective (which, obviously, needs to be included). However, I think the fact that we are not certain about Bakkah being a synonym of Mecca must be included.
