Whitley County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Kentucky.As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,712. [1] Its county seat is at Williamsburg, [2] though the largest city is Corbin, and the county's District Court (a trial court of limited jurisdiction) sits in both cities.
Many built-up areas in neighboring Laurel County have a Corbin postal address but lie outside the city limits. This arrangement has created some problems with taxes and census records. The city receives a portion of the occupational tax collected in Whitley County. However, Knox County has refused to give Corbin any tax collected there.
Because today's largest county by area, Pike County, is 788 square miles (2,041 km 2), it is only still possible to form a new county from portions of more than one existing county; McCreary County was formed in this manner, from parts of Wayne, Pulaski and Whitley counties.
