In February 2020, Emerald Cruises became the umbrella brand for Emerald Waterways and Emerald Yacht Cruises, a new ocean cruise line. In addition, it announced an upcoming launch of Emerald Azzurra, the first ship launched by Emerald Yacht Cruises, providing ocean cruises to the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Red Sea. [8]
Emerald was a steam yacht that was launched in Glasgow in 1902 for the shipbuilder, shipowner, and politician Sir Christopher Furness. She was an early example of a yacht powered by steam turbines. By 1909 she had been modified, with a triple-expansion engine replacing one of her turbines. In 1912 Christopher Furness died.
The company first offered river cruises in Europe in 2008 with the launch of Scenic Sapphire, followed by Scenic Emerald, Scenic Diamond, and Scenic Ruby in 2009. [6] In 2012, Scenic launched the Scenic Tsar, which operated on the Moscow-St Petersburg route. In 2013, Scenic established Emerald Waterways as a lower-cost river cruise line. [7]
