The crash was the first fatal accident in the history of Allegheny Airlines and was the deadliest until the 1969 crash of Allegheny Airlines Flight 853. Also the crash was the largest aviation incident in county history, and was the only deadly incident involving Williamsport Regional Airport until the Merion air disaster in 1991.
The aircraft a Convair CV-440 (serial number: 125) registered N8415H had 26,266 hours on the air frame and had been delivered to Allegheny in 1953. The flight crew included Captain Allen J. Lauber (36), who was hired in 1955 and was certified in the DC-3, CV240/340/440 as well as M 2-0-2.

On September 9, 1969, the aircraft serving the flight, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, collided in mid-air with a Piper PA-28 light aircraft near Fairland, Indiana. The DC-9 was carrying 78 passengers and 4 crew members, and the Piper was leased to a student pilot on a solo cross-country flight.
The crash was reported around 11:30 a.m. near the 2-mile marker close to U.S. 11 in the Williamsport area, a Maryland State Police spokesperson said in an email Thursday afternoon.
