The Kaikōura Canyon is partly within the Hikurangi Marine Reserve that was established off the Kaikōura coast in 2014. This marine reserve covers an area of 10,416 hectares (25,740 acres) south of the township. The reserve is the largest and deepest marine reserve adjacent to any of New Zealand's three main islands.
