The original parish church, the first church in Carey, began construction in 1868, under the direction of Father Edward Vatmann, pastor of St. Michael’s in Findlay, Ohio. At its dedication, it was given the name of St. Edward. In 1873 Father Joseph Peter Gloden, pastor of the church of St. Nicholas, Frenchtown, came to serve the parish. [2]
In 1842, the first Catholic church in Toledo, St. Francis de Sales, was constructed. [ 4 ] Pope Pius IX erected the Diocese of Cleveland in 1847, with territory taken from Cincinnati.
In September 2020, Pope Francis congratulated the congregation on it upcoming centennial anniversary, and encouraged its members to continue to spread devotion to St. Michael. [5] In September 2021, the Congregation celebrated its 100-year jubilee with a Mass of Thanksgiving at celebrated at St. Peter's Cathedral Basilica (London, Ontario). [9]

Saint Michael's feast day of September 29 has been solemnly celebrated in many locations since the fifth century. And many churches that honor Saint Michael are dedicated on the 29th of September, e.g., Pope Boniface IV dedicated Saint Michael's Church in Rome on that day in 610. [28]
