Highland Park UMC Sanctuary The current sanctuary was designed by architect Mark Lemmon (1889–1975) and Roscoe DeWitt (1894-1975) and built in 1927. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] The first service in the sanctuary was held on February 6, 1927, when Dr Umphrey Lee served as the pastor. [ 3 ]
In 1868, a frame chapel for interdenominational services was built behind where the First United Methodist Church currently stands. [2] Membership in this church declined in the 1880s, and the structure became an Episcopal chapel in 1885. In 1892, the chapel was sold to the Methodists for $1 (and assumption of the church debt). Trinity United Methodist was built by the Cass United Methodist Church of Detroit, as a mission church to serve membership in Highland Park who lived too far to travel the eight miles to Cass United. [2] The structure served as a Methodist church from its dedication in 1923 until 1978. In the 1950s the church had a mission for Japanese people. [3]

The continued growth made way for a 3,050-seat sanctuary, an educational wing and prayer chapel in 2004. Live web streaming of worship services began in late 2008 for those unable to worship at a physical location. Since the launch of live streaming, groups around the city and country gather to watch the services online.
