The Newport Harbor Light, also known as the Goat Island Light or Green Light, built in 1842, is located on north end of Goat Island, which is part of the city of Newport, Rhode Island, United States, in Narragansett Bay. [2] [3] [4] The light was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
The original light was replaced with an automated, acetylene light on a skeleton tower. It was deactivated in 1963. The original Fresnel lens is on display at the Museum of Newport History. The lighthouse is maintained as the clubhouse of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. They have a light as a private aid during part of the year. [2]
Ida Lewis was born in Newport, Rhode Island, the second oldest of four children of Captain Hosea Lewis of the Revenue-Marine.Her father was transferred to the Lighthouse Service and appointed keeper of Lime Rock Light on the small near-island Lime Rock in Newport in 1854, taking his family to live on the rock in 1857. It was made famous by Ida Lewis, the lighthouse keeper of the tower built on it in 1854 which is now known as Ida Lewis Rock Light. [1]
The first lighthouse in the state was erected in 1749 [1] and the last in 1962 (ignoring automated towers erected later); the oldest surviving structure is the much-modified Poplar Point Light, although the tower now standing at Prudence Island Light was first erected at Goat Island in 1824.
