Valdosta State University was established in 1906 in Valdosta, Georgia. South Georgia State Normal College began as a two-year teaching college in 1913 and was an all-female school until 1950 when the name was changed to Valdosta State College. VSC experienced rapid growth in the 1960s and 70s in student population and in construction on campus.

Built as a dormitory for the South Georgia State Normal College, it was named Ashley Hall for C.R. Ashley, the Treasurer of the Board of Trustees in 1923. The 40-acre (160,000 m 2) north campus of VSU was the former home of Emory Junior College, a two-year institution which opened in 1928. [2] Enrollment was low in the 1930s during the Great Depression and the United States entry into World War II depleted the school's enrollment to the point that Emory Junior College had to close during the duration of the War.
The Grand Design was recognized with Fletcher Pratt award for best non-fiction Civil War book of 2010 by the Civil War Round Table of New York [6] and was a Main Selection of the History Book Club. He was named as an Outstanding Alumnus of Valdosta State University by the Department of History in 2014. [1]

The Lady Blazer Softball Team began in 1992 under head coach Ron Durante. Thomas Macera has been the head softball coach since 2006.
