Fort Hill, photographed in 1887, was the home of John C. Calhoun and later Thomas Green Clemson and is at the center of the university campus.. Thomas Green Clemson, the university's founder, came to the foothills of South Carolina in 1838, when he married Anna Maria Calhoun, daughter of John C. It was originally built as the Chemistry laboratory, it was expanded in 1900 and 1937, and has housed the Education department and administration offices. [18] It currently houses the departments of History, Philosophy, and Religion. The building is a contributing property to the Clemson University Historic District II (NRHP).
