After Namibia gained independence, the football association was founded in 1990 and became a member of FIFA and the CAF in 1992. [1] The team played its first official match on 7 June 1990 in Windhoek against Mauritius , resulting in a 1–2 defeat. [ 2 ]

The Namibia national football team has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, but has won the COSAFA Cup in 2015 and has twice been runners up in the same. They have qualified for two African Cups of Nations, in 1998 and 2008 , where they advanced from the first round in 2023 .
