The nine missions include two, Ulysses and New Horizons, whose primary objectives were not outer planets, but which flew past Jupiter to gain gravity assists en route to a polar orbit around the Sun (Ulysses), and to Pluto (New Horizons). Pluto was considered a planet at the time that New Horizons launched, but was reclassified as a dwarf planet.
Jupiter as seen by the space probe Cassini. Flights from Earth to other planets in the Solar System have a high energy cost. It requires almost the same amount of energy for a spacecraft to reach Jupiter from Earth's orbit as it does to lift it into orbit in the first place.
Jupiter 5 August 2011 4 July 2016 entered orbit: 1,795 days (4 y, 10 m, 29 d) First solar-powered Jupiter orbiter, mission to study Jupiter's interior and magnetic environment. [72] Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity - Rover) Mars 26 November 2011 6 August 2012 landed: 253 days (8 m, 10 d) 14h 15m 57s 900 kg mobile lander [73]
The moon’s gravity slightly bent Juice’s path so it received a much larger gravity assist from Earth. The flyby of Earth reduced Juice’s speed by 10,737 miles per hour (4.8 kilometers per ...
A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket carrying NASA's Europa Clipper space probe launches from Kennedy Space Center on Oct. 14, 2024, on a mission to orbit Jupiter and study its icy moon, Europa, for signs ...
It will flyby Earth twice — once in September 2026 and once in January 2029 — to gain more energy before finally arriving at Jupiter in July 2031. Juice captures an image of the moon while ...
Timelapse of Voyager 2 approaching Jupiter. The plains of Pluto, as seen by New Horizons after its nearly 10-year voyage. Remotely guided space probes have flown by all of the observed planets of the Solar System from Mercury to Neptune, with the New Horizons probe having flown by the dwarf planet Pluto and the Dawn spacecraft currently orbiting the dwarf planet Ceres.
NASA's Juno spacecraft captured this view of Jupiter during the mission's 54th close flyby of the giant planet Sept. 7, 2023.
