John Hadley was born on a farm in Hendricks County, Indiana to a family of Quakers of Irish descent (specifically from County Meath) who moved to Plainfield, Indiana from Guilford County, North Carolina in 1822. His parents were Jonathan Hadley (who died in 1842) and Ara Hadley (née Carter, originally from Collinsville, Ohio). [1] [2] [3]
Charles Brenton Huggins (September 22, 1901 – January 12, 1997) was a Canadian-American surgeon and physiologist known for his work on prostate function, prostate cancer, and breast cancer.
The school was founded in 1920 by William A. Hadley, a Chicago high school teacher who lost his sight at age 55. [1] To address the absence of educational opportunities for blind people, he began teaching braille by mail and established a school offering accessible, tuition-free classes for blind and visually impaired people.

To the east, the residential area is bounded by Indianapolis Boulevard; beyond that lies the industrial district along the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal. To the west, Southside adjoins North Hammond. Southside was the site of the very first home built in East Chicago, that of William H. Penman (later East Chicago's first mayor), built in 1888. [2]
