The discovery of the oldest known Earth rock, found on the Moon, was reported in January 2019 by NASA scientists. Apollo 14 astronauts returned several rocks from the Moon and, later, scientists determined that a fragment from one of the rocks, nicknamed Big Bertha, contained "a bit of Earth from about 4 billion years ago".
The oldest felsic rocks that are currently exposed intruded pre-existing, even older, mafic crustal rock and crystallized well beneath the Earth's surface. Later, these rocks were thermally metamorphosed, intruded by additional felsic magma, and partially melted during Eoarchean thermal events occurred about 3.85 to 3.72 Ga and 3.66 to 3.59 Ga.
Mount Roraima is composed of Proterozoic age sandstone formed about 1.7 to 2 billion years ago, [11] [14] [15] [21] and hence amongst the oldest rocks on Earth. It contains a large amount of quartz deposits, [ 9 ] [ 14 ] [ 15 ] [ 21 ] 98% are silica particles, [ 16 ] forming white or pink crystals several centimeters long.

Quartz-pebble metaconglomerate (Jack Hills Quartzite), the rock type that contains Earth's oldest dated mineral grains (detrital zircon) Detrital zircons with ages greater than 4 billion years old have been found in these rocks, and a 4,404 ± 8 million year old zircon was found at Erawandoo Hill; [4] this is the oldest dated material originating on Earth; the date is in the Cryptic era of the ...
Evidence of possibly the oldest forms of life on Earth has been found in hydrothermal vent precipitates. [1]The earliest known life forms on Earth may be as old as 4.1 billion years (or Ga) according to biologically fractionated graphite inside a single zircon grain in the Jack Hills range of Australia. After 60 years of trying, geologists finally pried rocks from Earth's upper mantle. That's huge for so many reasons.
Archaeologists claim this pyramid is 27,000 years is old. But some scientists argue the structure can't be that ancient—and that humans couldn't have built it.
