The arrival of the B-Sens marked the return of the AHL to the area after a five-year absence. The Rhode Island Reds, a charter member of the AHL, moved to Binghamton in 1977 and played there until 1997, known variously as the Binghamton Dusters (1977–1980), the Binghamton Whalers (1980–1990), and the Binghamton Rangers (1990–1997).

The AHL returned in 2002 with the Binghamton Senators, who were affiliated with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League. The arena and the Senators hosted the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic with the skills contest and game broadcast on consecutive nights on live TV across the US and Canada.
In 2012–13, Hamilton missed the season's first 35 games with Binghamton, returning to the line-up to play 38 games with the Senators, recording four goals and four assists. Following the 2013–14 season, the Senators did not tender a qualifying offer to Hamilton and as a result he became an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2014. [ 2 ]
