Coming off a program-worst 2–9 season, Stony Brook completed a winless season for the first time in 2023 to set a new program low, having lost 19 of its last 21 games. Defensive coordinator Bryan Collins died before the season started on July 8, 2023 from a sudden cardiac event.
The program participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision and currently competes in the twelve-member Colonial Athletic Association. The program plays its home games at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, New York. Stony Brook first fielded a varsity team at the Division III level in 1984 and rose to Division II in 1996.
