In the 1975–76 school year, the Lansing School District acquired and renovated the 4,200-seat field house at the adjacent Boys' Training School, then being closed by the State of Michigan. The field house was renamed in 1982 after longtime LEHS (Lansing Eastern High School) teacher and wrestling coach Don Johnson.
Flynn played football at Michigan State from 1962 to 1964. At the end of his senior year he won the Ross Trophy, given annually to the best scholar-athlete. [1] Following his graduation from Michigan State he served as an assistant coach at Lansing Eastern High School from 1965 to 1966 before serving four years in the United States Air Force as a lieutenant.

After three consecutive undefeated seasons at Newberry, he moved to Eastern High School in Lansing Michigan, where he stayed for two seasons before he was hired at Albion. After success at Eastern, Peterman played four seasons at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1998-2002 and finished in the top 10 in school history in scoring, rebounding and free-throw percentage.
