Cruet bottle, 1780–1800, V&A Museum no. 118-1907 A cruet (/ ˈ k r uː ɪ t /), also called a caster, [1] is a small flat-bottomed vessel with a narrow neck. Cruets often have a lip or spout and may also have a handle.
The presence of a spout means that the beaker cannot have a lid. However, when in use, beakers may be covered by a watch glass to prevent contamination or loss of the contents, but allowing venting via the spout. Alternatively, a beaker may be covered with another larger beaker that has been inverted, though a watch glass is preferable.
The jars were invented and patented by Rudolph Rempel. Johann Carl Weck purchased the patent from Rempel, and in 1900 Weck and his best salesman George Van Eyck founded the J. WECK Company in Germany. In 1902, Weck left the company, Van Eyck continued to improve the design and function of the jar, and started exporting the jars outside of Germany.
