The Dutchess County Agricultural Society, formed in 1841, first organized the fair in 1842 at Washington Hollow in Pleasant Valley, New York. [1] The fair was mainly started as an old-fashioned agricultural event in which farmers would come and show off their livestock, crops, and tools with a popular event being a plow competition. [2]
It also includes vendors of the materials and tools associated with each. It is held in October of each year at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, New York. [3] In addition to the myriad vendors and demonstrations of fiber arts activities, the festival features several livestock competitions, sheepdog trials and a sheep to shawl contest.

There are plans to expand this exhibit. Dutchess County Fairgrounds is located on U.S. Route 9, about 3 miles from Amtrak's Rhinecliff-Kingston station.
