The Penwith Society of Arts is an art group formed in St Ives, Cornwall, England, UK, in early 1949 by abstract artists who broke away from the more conservative St Ives School. [1] It was originally led by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson, and included members of the Crypt Group of the St Ives Society, including Peter Lanyon and Sven Berlin.

[1] The term is often used to refer to the 20th century groups which sprung up after the First World War around such artists as Borlase Smart, however there was considerable artistic activity there from the late 19th Century onwards.
Before the 1940s, most artists in St Ives and West Cornwall belonged to the St Ives Society of Artists, but events in the late 1940s led to a dispute between the abstract and figurative artists in the group. [citation needed] In 1948, the abstract faction broke away to form the Penwith Society of Artists led by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.

In 1937 his works Road To Land's End and Rotten Row, Hyde Park and The Canal Bank; in 1938 he submitted Sunday Morning At Hammersmith; and in 1939 he submitted his last pieces Northerly Gale Over Cornwall and Windsor Great Park. [7] He joined the St. Ives Society of Artists after the Second World War, becoming its Secretary in 1939. [3]
Maurice Sumray (1920–2004) was an English artist and engraver, based in St Ives, Cornwall. Sumray was described by Wyndham Lewis in The Listener as one of the "best artists in England". [1] Major retrospective exhibitions of his work were displayed at the Penwith Gallery, St Ives in 1984, and the Falmouth Art Gallery in 1997, [2]
