Peter Mondavi Sr. (November 8, 1914 – February 20, 2016) was an American winemaker. Born to Italian immigrants Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, [ 1 ] as the youngest of four children, he moved from Minnesota to Lodi, California in 1922, when his father began a firm transporting grapes during the Prohibition. [ 2 ]
Margrit Biever Mondavi (née Kellenberger; August 2, 1925 – September 2, 2016) was a Swiss-born American businesswoman. She was vice president of Cultural Affairs at Robert Mondavi Winery which she joined in 1967. Under her direction, Robert Mondavi Winery developed original cultural and culinary arts programs.
It was the first new large-scale winery to be established in the valley since before prohibition. Following the establishment of the Mondavi estate, the number of wineries in the valley continued to grow, as did the region's reputation. Some California wine makers began to produce quality wines but still had difficulty marketing them.
In 1943, Robert Mondavi persuaded his parents, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi, to purchase the inactive winery from Moffitt for $75,000. [7] Robert Mondavi began his wine career there, until he founded his own winery in 1966. The winery still exists, and is owned by Robert's younger brother Peter Mondavi's family. [8]
