In the stamp folding problem, the paper is a strip of stamps with creases between them, and the folds must lie on the creases. In the map folding problem, the paper is a map, divided by creases into rectangles, and the folds must again lie only along these creases. Lucas (1891) credits the invention of the stamp folding problem to Émile ...
Also amphidrome and tidal node. A geographical location where there is little or no tide, i.e. where the tidal amplitude is zero or nearly zero because the height of sea level does not change appreciably over time (meaning there is no high tide or low tide), and around which a tidal crest circulates once per tidal period (approximately every 12 hours). Tidal amplitude increases, though not ...
Topographic view of Earth relative to Earth's center (instead of to mean sea level, as in common topographic maps) By the late 1600s, serious effort was devoted to modeling the Earth as an ellipsoid, beginning with French astronomer Jean Picard 's measurement of a degree of arc along the Paris meridian .
Column 4 indicates on which 1:50,000 or 1" scale geological map sheet published by the British Geological Survey (BGS) the fold is shown and named (either on map/s or cross-section/s or both). 'E&W' signifies the series of sheets published to cover England and Wales.
Folds can have a fold axis. A fold axis "is the closest approximation to a straight line that when moved parallel to itself, generates the form of the fold". [2] (Ramsay 1967). A fold that can be generated by a fold axis is called a cylindrical fold. This term has been broadened to include near-cylindrical folds.
Topographic map showing detachment folds in the eastern Sichuan Basin, China.. A detachment fold, in geology, occurs as layer parallel thrusting along a decollement (or detachment) develops without upward propagation of a fault; the accommodation of the strain produced by continued displacement along the underlying thrust results in the folding of the overlying rock units.
Shaded-relief map showing ridges of the Yakima Fold Belt of south-central Washington, mostly between Interstate 90 (red line) and the Columbia River (bottom). Red square in center is the city of Yakima, red rectangle at lower right is the Tri-Cities, red circles are various cities, triangles are the Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams volcanoes of the Southern Washington Cascades.
