Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts was a prominent New York City law firm that traced its origins to a law partnership formed there in 1868. McCahery began his legal practice career in 1985 as a law clerk at the Winthrop Stimson Putnam & Roberts. In 1988 he worked as a summer associate for Meagher & Flom in New York. From 1988 till 1989 he worked as a judicial clerk at the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Following his graduation from Columbia Law, he passed the bar and began the practice of law in New York. From 1893 until 1897, he was with the firm of Root, Howard, Winthrop & Stimson, of which Elihu Root (later a U.S. Senator, Secretary of War and Secretary of State under Theodore Roosevelt) was a partner.
