This is a list of parties in the world that consider themselves to be upholding the principles and values of green politics. Some are also members of the Global Greens , [ 1 ] the European Green Party , the Nordic Green Left Alliance or other international organizations.
The world's first green parties were founded in 1972. These were in the Australian state of Tasmania (the United Tasmania Group) and in New Zealand (the Values Party).Others followed quickly: in 1973, PEOPLE (later the Ecology Party) was set up in the UK, and in other European countries Green and radical parties sprang up in the following years.

The Global Greens Charter is a document that 800 delegates from the Green parties of 72 countries decided upon a first gathering of the Global Greens in Canberra, Australia in April 2001. [1] The first part contains six guiding principles, whereas the second part specifies what political action should be taken.
As of April 18, 2023, eleven Green Party members have been elected to mayor-level positions in local offices. Gayle McLaughlin was twice elected mayor of Richmond, California , defeating two Democrats in 2006, [ 21 ] [ 22 ] and reelected in 2010, and elected to City Council in 2014 after completing her second term as mayor.
