Arizona Army National Guard units are trained and equipped as part of the United States Army. The same ranks and insignia are used and National Guardsmen are eligible to receive all United States military awards. Camp Papago Park was a prisoner of war (POW) facility located in Papago Park in the eastern part of Phoenix, Arizona, United States.It consisted of five compounds, four for enlisted men and one for officers.
In October 1986 the unit was released from the 49th Armored Division and redesignated as the 551st Aviation Battalion. A year later it was reorganized and redesignated as the 285th Aviation, a parent regiment under the United States Army Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battalion. It was equipped with AH-64A Apache aircraft in 1991.
