Smith's Chapel is a single-story wood frame post-and-beam chapel with clapboard siding and a gable roof on a fieldstone foundation. [2] It measures 40 by 48 feet (12 m × 15 m), with a hallway 8 feet (2.4 m) wide across the front, and a 40-by-40-foot (12 m × 12 m) sanctuary.
Both the community and the stream were named for Elisha Smith, an early landowner. A post office was established in October 1861. It was given a station on the Grand Trunk Railroad line in 1865. Smiths Creek was the county seat of St. Clair County from 1869 until April 1871, when it was removed to Port Huron. [6]
