The Porcupine Mountains, which are part of one of the oldest mountain chains in the world, [3] rise to an altitude of almost 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level and form the watershed between the streams flowing into Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

The south lake has an average depth of 24 feet (7.3 m), and a maximum depth of 62 feet (19 m); the north lake has an average depth of 40 feet (12 m) and a maximum depth of 121 feet (37 m).
