The Smith-McDowell House is a c. 1840 brick mansion located in Asheville, North Carolina. [2] It is one of the "finest antebellum buildings in Western North Carolina." [2] Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was the first mansion built in Asheville and is the oldest surviving brick structure in Buncombe County.
The original investors who built Beaver Lake lost much of their wealth after the Central Bank & Trust crashed [5] in 1930 due to poor real estate returns. Simpler family homes were built in the area after WWII. [3] The wall between the lake and the adjoining pool was removed in 1952, as the cost of repairing it was deemed too high. [12]
