The Eurasian eagle-owl has a very wide range across much of Europe and Asia, estimated to be about 32,000,000 km 2 (12,000,000 sq mi). In Europe, the population is estimated at 19,000 to 38,000 breeding pairs, and in the whole world around 250,000 to 2,500,000 individual birds.
The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), also known as the tiger owl (originally derived from early naturalists' description as the "winged tiger" or "tiger of the air") [3] or the hoot owl, [4] is a large owl native to the Americas. It is an extremely adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. [5]
The Eurasian eagle-owl predates the largest members of the most species-rich diurnal raptor genera: the 900 g (2.0 lb) Eurasian goshawks from the genus Accipiter, the 1,375 g (3.031 lb) upland buzzards from the genus Buteo, and the 1,460 g (3.22 lb) gyrfalcons (F. rusticolus) of the genus Falco. The word bubo is Latin for the Eurasian eagle owl and was used as the specific epithet for the species by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. [ 4 ] A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2020 found that species in the genera Scotopelia and Ketupa were embedded within the clade containing members of the genus Bubo making the genus Bubo paraphyletic .
Many of these have distinctive head patterns. Note: 29 species are listed for SW Arizona; about a third range into the southwest, about 1/3 are common to the southeast Arizona biome and the other third are mountainous, or Mexican–ranging, or range north, or west to California, but all have southwest Arizona in or adjacent in the range maps.
A Eurasian eagle owl at the Minnesota Zoo escaped its handler, only to land in a tiger enclosure, where it was killed, according to a government report and the zoo.
Predators of the barn owl include large American opossums (Didelphis), the common raccoon, and similar carnivorous mammals, as well as eagles, larger hawks, and other owls. Among the latter, the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), in the Americas, and the Eurasian eagle-owl (B. bubo) are noted predators of barn owls.
