Karl was born in South Tyrol, Italy to an Austrian father, Anton Karl (1899–1984) and an Italian mother, Rosa Maria Adami (1911–1966).His father was a minister and a writer, but it was his mother who encouraged Karl's artistic development through her own interest in design and the arts.
