The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) track and field system has been touted as one of the main reasons for the success of the United States on the global stage of athletics. [1] All of the collegiate records come from athletes competing in the NCAA, with the exception of the outdoor women's 1500 metres record (NAIA).
This is a list of the NCAA Division I outdoor champions in the 1500 meters or its imperial equivalent mile run. The mile was contested until 1975, while the metric 1500 meters was contested in Olympic years starting in 1932. Metrication occurred in 1976, so all subsequent championships were at the metric distance.
Vanderkaay captured four NCAA titles and 14 Big Ten Conference titles. He also won a silver and two bronze medals representing the US at the 2003 World University Games. In his first year in college, he was Big Ten Champion in the 500-yard freestyle and the 800-yard freestyle relay. He also was CSCAA All-American in the 500 and the mile.
In 2012, he became an All-American in three disciplines (500-yard freestyle, 800-yard freestyle relay, 1,650-yard freestyle) and was the Big Ten champion in the latter two. At the 2016 Men's NCAA Division I Championships he finished seventh in the 500 and 12th in the 200-yard freestyle. [12] He also placed 15th in the mile and was part of the 800-yard freestyle relay that finished 19th. As a senior, Grothe finished fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the 2014 Men's NCAA Division I Championships.
Smith grew up in Ridgefield, Connecticut and graduated from Ridgefield High School in 2018. [5] Smith attends the University of Florida where he competes collegiately as part of the Florida Gators and set the American and NCAA records in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:06.32 at the 2020 SEC Championships.

At Donner Swim Club, at 12 he set every club record but the 100 freestyle. [5] In 2015, he was the Indiana State Champion in the 500-yard freestyle. In the 2017 Junior World Championships, he took a bronze in the 800 meter freestyle and a silver in the 1500 meter freestyle with a personal best time of 15.09. [8] [6] [1] [9]
