Pond life is an umbrella term for all life forms found in ponds. Although there is considerable overlap with the species lists for small lakes and even slow-flowing rivers, pond life includes some species not found elsewhere, and as a biome it represents a unique assemblage of species.

A pond is a small, still, land-based body of water formed by pooling inside a depression, either naturally or artificially.
This garden pond has two ponds separated by a waterfall with a one-foot drop; generally, the fish in the upper pond are smaller, and ones in the lower pond are larger. Ponds may be created by natural processes or by people; however, the origin of the hole in the ground makes little difference to the kind of wildlife that will be found in the pond.

Vernal pool basins are often characteristics of Mediterranean climates, but occur in many other ecosystems, such as forested areas of the Canadian Shield, where they are difficult to identify because of the forest canopy. [2] Most pools are dry for at least part of the year, and fill with the winter rains, spring snowmelts and rising water tables.
Local conditions, such as annual rainfall and slope aspect, can determine runoff amounts. Influxes of runoff can cause sediment deposition in salt ponds, eventually causing infill of the pond to occur. Natural grazing and predation around salt ponds can trample vegetation, increase local erosion, and introduce nutrients to the ecosystem. [1]
