Gary Robert Rossington (December 4, 1951 – March 5, 2023) was an American musician best known as a founding guitarist of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, with whom he performed until his death. Rossington was also a founding member of the Rossington Collins Band , along with former bandmate Allen Collins .
The Rossington Collins Band was an American Southern rock band founded in 1979 by guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins following the 1977 plane crash which killed three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, of which both had been members. [1] The band included two other surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed under the name My Backyard in 1964, which was later changed to The Noble Five, and again to One Percent. [2] The group originally included vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, bassist Larry Junstrom and drummer Bob Burns, all of whom were students at Robert E. Lee High School. [3]
Lynyrd Skynyrd (/ l ɛ n ər d ˈ s k ɪ n ər d /, LEN-ərd SKIN-ərd) [2] is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The group originally formed as My Backyard and comprised Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Gary Rossington (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass), and Bob Burns (drums).
The couple formed a new group, simply called Rossington. The band released their debut album, Returned to the Scene of the Crime, in 1986, having previously obtained drummer Derek Hess from the Allen Collins Band, the only original member with whom Gary Rossington had previously played in the RC Band besides Dale, who was retained as lead vocalist.
Van Zant's inspiration for the song was the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members culminating in the evening when guitarist Gary Rossington crashed his Ford Torino into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, Florida, [1] after excessive consumption of alcohol and other drugs. The three (King, Hall along with founding member Gary Rossington) re-form the famous triple-lead guitar attack of the original band. New background vocalists Carol Bristow and Dale Krantz-Rossington were added to take the place of the original Honkettes. This is the first album of new recordings produced by the band after the '77 plane crash.
