Joseph Milton Nance (September 18, 1913 – January 17, 1997) [a] was an American historian and educator with a focus on the history of Texas.From 1941 until his 1979 retirement, he taught at Texas A&M University, [2] and he was the department chair of the Department of History and Government from 1958 to 1968, and of the successor Department of History until 1973.
The area in which Missouri City is now located holds a significant part in the history of Texas that dates back to its early days as part of the United States. In August 1853, the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway (BBB&C), began operating its first 20 miles (32 km) of rail line that stretched from Harrisburg (now Houston) to Stafford's Point (now Stafford).
Nance was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from the St. Mark's School of Texas. [2] He earned Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Southern Methodist University and Dedman School of Law. [3] [4] Nance served in the United States Air Force as a pilot during the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq.

Nance is an extinct town in eastern Taney County, in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. [1] The townsite sits above the east bank of the west fork of Big Creek about one mile north of U.S. Route 160 and about 1.7 miles west of the Taney - Ozark county line. [2] The site is at an elevation of 876 feet. [1]
