Olympus Mons (/ ə ˌ l ɪ m p ə s ˈ m ɒ n z, oʊ-/; [4] Latin for 'Mount Olympus') is a large shield volcano on Mars. It is over 21.9 km (13.6 mi; 72,000 ft) high as measured by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA), [ 5 ] about 2.5 times the elevation of Mount Everest above sea level .
The main part of Tamu's rounded dome extends over an area of 450 km × 650 km (280 mi × 400 mi), totaling more than 292,500 km 2 (112,900 sq mi), many times larger than Mauna Loa, which has an area of 5,000 km 2 (1,900 sq mi), and about half the area of the Martian volcano Olympus Mons. [a] The entire mass of Tamu consists of basalt.
However, the largest volcano on the planet, Olympus Mons, is thought to have formed when the plates were not moving. Olympus Mons may have formed just after the plate motion stopped. The mare-like plains on Mars are roughly 3 to 3.5 billion years old. [72] The giant shield volcanoes are younger, formed between 1 and 2 billion years ago.
The detection and analysis of marsquakes are informative to probing the interior structure of Mars, as well as potentially identifying whether any of Mars's many volcanoes continue to be volcanically active. [1] Quakes have been observed and well-documented on the Moon, and there is evidence of past quakes on Venus.
Today, Mars is believed to be largely tectonically inactive. However, observational evidence and its interpretation suggests that this was not the case further back in Mars's geological history. At the scale of the whole planet, two large scale physiographic features are apparent on the surface. The first is that the northern hemisphere of the ...

This list of shield volcanoes includes active, dormant and extinct shield volcanoes.Shield volcanoes are one of the three types [specify] of volcanoes. They have a short cone shape, and have basaltic lava which means the lava has low viscosity (viscosity is a measure of the ability for a liquid to flow)
The Texas A&M Forest Service said Saturday night, March 16, that the Smokehouse Creek Fire, estimated at a total 1,058,482 acres, was 100% contained, as is the 144,045-acre Windy Deuce Fire.
