Horiuchi Mural, also known as Seattle Mural, [1] is a mural by Paul Horiuchi in Seattle Center, in Seattle, Washington. It was commissioned for the Century 21 Exposition (1962) and was billed as the largest artwork in the Pacific Northwest.
The mural was commissioned in 1930 for Pomona's newly built neo-Gothic men's dining hall by its architect, Sumner Spaulding, and professor of art history and Hispanic studies José Pijoán . [10] Journalist Alma Reed , a patron of Orozco's in New York, also helped the artist obtain the commission. [ 11 ]
The murals were discovered in 2004 during an archaeological research in the building 1 of the Chiik Naab acropolis where a big substructure was found inside constisting of a 12 metres high stepped pyramidal building completely covered by the mural paintings and whose construction is estimated to have been between the years 650 and 700 AD. The building the mural is painted on is a Mexican meat market and the owner specified that they wanted a mural that had something to do with food.
