Prior to the 1950s, the Canadian road to this crossing traversed a steep hill at the border, which caused problems for winter travelers. Around 1952, Canada excavated much of the hill and built a new inspection plaza on relatively level ground. This border crossing was closed in 1985 when I-95 was completed immediately to the north.
