As of June 1, 2009, the route between US 98 (Back Beach Road) at Panama City Beach and SR 20 at Ebro was being expanded to four lanes. A second bridge over the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway at West Bay has been completed and is now open making the four lane complete for about a 5-mile (8.0 km) stretch from US 98 northward to the intersection of SR 79 and SR 388 at West Bay.

Panama City Beach is a resort town in the Florida Panhandle, and principal city of the Panama City Metropolitan Area. It is a popular vacation destination, especially among people in the Southern United States, and is located in the "Emerald Coast" area. Panama City Beach had a population of 18,094 at the 2020 census, up from 12,018 in 2010. [4]
US 98 runs east–west through the city itself, leading southeast 24 miles (39 km) to Mexico Beach and west 10 miles (16 km) to Panama City Beach. The two main north–south thoroughfares in the city are Martin Luther King Boulevard, otherwise known as SR 77 and US 231. SR 77 leads north six miles (9.7 km) to the Panama City suburb of Lynn Haven.
In 2020, the number of operating streetcars was reduced to ten as car #429 was in an accident that damaged it beyond repair. The replica vehicles resemble the originals that were operating in the city from the 1920s to 1946. The Birney #163, is the fully restored unit and is smaller than the replica models. [17]
Thunder Beach is a biannual motorcycle rally in Panama City Beach, Florida that first began in 1999 in the Tiki Bar at the Sandpiper Beacon Beach Resort, as an event named "The Bike & Beach Bash". [2] The motorcycle rally attracted 65,000 people in 2007 and about 58,000 in 2008. [1]
