The Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a network protocol for encapsulating Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frames inside Ethernet frames. It appeared in 1999, in the context of the boom of DSL as the solution for tunneling packets over the DSL connection to the ISP 's IP network, and from there to the rest of the Internet.

In computer networking, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is a data link layer (layer 2) communication protocol between two routers directly without any host or any other networking in between. [1] It can provide loop detection, authentication, transmission encryption, [2] and data compression. PPP is used over many types of physical networks ...

In computer networking, the Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM (PPPoA) is a layer 2 data-link protocol typically used to connect domestic broadband modems to ISPs via phone lines. It is used mainly with DOCSIS and DSL carriers, by encapsulating PPP frames in ATM AAL5. Point-to-Point Protocol over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (PPPoA) is specified by ...

Both PPP variants handle passwords in the same way as any other PPP variant (e.g. pap or chap), most of the other schemes afaict don't do passwords at all. Ethernet is not ATM-based. See the Ethernet article to see how Ethernet works. To understand how PPPoE works, see the PPPoE article and the RFC for PPPoE. It doesn't use anything about ATM ...

A PPP endpoint can request a specific IP address from its peer. It can also ask the peer to suggest an IP address by requesting the address 0.0.0.0; the peer then sends its suggestion in an IPCP Nak packet, which the first peer must subsequently request in order to complete the negotiation.

There is a tunnelling when encapsulation is done without increasing the layer number. When using a normal POTS modem, the protocol stack is : PPP (2), IP (3), TCP (4). 2 being lower as 3, this is "normal" encapsulation and not tunnelling. With PPPoE for example, at some point the layer number goes down, this is tunnelling.
