I wish Java had the option to let us use 128x128 resolution custom skins like Bedrock does for custom skins. Java is severely lacking in player customization and Bedrock even lets you have fully transparent pixels on the base layer so we can make ghost skins. Java needs to catch up/make parity here imo and not just only have 64x64 res custom skins.
4D skins basically refer to skins with voxels that 'pop-out', i.e. they have a different shape from the generic 1-block-for-each-limb shape that skins usually have. It's a little tricky, but: Run the game and get into a world, then close MC. Go to. C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\assets\skins\. Sort those folders by date, look for the most recent one (it should be the time you last ran the game) Go into that folder, and there's all those files with looooong gibberish names, with no extension ...

Here is what I have tried, in which none of these attempts worked: Uninstalling and reinstalling Minecraft. Changing my skin multiple times in my profile on Mineraft.net. Using and not using add-ons such as Optifine. Checking if there are any programs that may interfere with Minecraft (I couldn't find any).
Like I said somewhere in the .minecraft directory. A 30 second search of that directory shows equipped/previously equipped skins are stored in separate directories in .minecraft/assets/skins the files have random names and no file extensions, but when opened with Paint, etc, they load the skin files.
