During their careers, the members of Slipknot have developed their images, updating their uniforms and each member's mask upon the release of each album. [246] [51] The appearance and style of the masks do not usually differ significantly between albums; members typically maintain the established theme of their mask while adding new elements.
During his time with Slipknot, Wilson's mask has been, for the most part, based on gas masks. His first mask worn for the release of Slipknot was a British Civil Duty gas mask, which had been customised with the front filter being removed, as well as the glass lenses. It has become synonymous with the DJ ever since he adopted it in 1999.
Thomson originally met founding Slipknot members Anders Colsefni, Donnie Steele and Paul Gray through their mutual involvement in death metal band Body Pit, later joined in early 1996. Following the departure of bandmates drummer Joey Jordison in 2013 and sampler Craig Jones in 2023, Thomson is now the second longest-serving member of Slipknot.
Crahan felt that the original vocalist for Slipknot was too guttural, and was the primary reason for Slipknot's inability to get a record deal. He brought in Corey Taylor from another local band called Stone Sour, whose vocals were more melodic. Slipknot got a record deal a couple years later and released their first official album in 1999.
Of Slipknot's nine-member lineup, which lasted from 1999–2010, Joey was the third to join the band. He was also the drummer and founder of Scar the Martyr, which formed in 2013 and disbanded in 2016. With Slipknot, Jordison performed on the band's first five studio albums, and produced the 2005 live album 9.0: Live.

Following the death of Gray in May 2010, Slipknot took a brief hiatus and later announced that Steele would replace the bassist for upcoming tour dates. [6] In an official statement, the band explained that "Donnie was in the band at the very beginning, and rather than get an outsider, we thought it would be a fitting tribute to Paul to play with someone from within the family".
