The use of the "Albemarles" nickname corresponds with the Albemarle Settlements, which were the first permanent English settlements in what became North Carolina and the Albemarle Sound in the region. NC 94 was established in 1930 as a new primary spur routing from NC 91, in Swindell Fork to Fairfield. [2] In 1931, NC 94 was extended north on new primary routing to NC 90 , in Columbia . [ 3 ] In 1935, NC 94's southern terminus was rerouted to US 264 , in Rose Bay ; the reroute was a swap with NC 6 . [ 4 ]

Edenton is a town in, and the county seat of, Chowan County, North Carolina, United States, [6] on Albemarle Sound. The population was 4,397 at the 2020 census. [7] Edenton is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. In recent years Edenton has become a popular retirement location and a destination for heritage tourism.
